Steve Goodwin
Steve Goodwin joined The Life Guards as a Junior Trooper at the then Guards Depot, Pirbright in 1983. Completing his basic training in 1984 he joined his regiment in Windsor which were then roled as a Medium Reconnaissance unit on CVR/T & W as part of 5 Airborne Brigade. For the next 5 years he served in role gaining both mechanic and instructor qualifications in addition to seeing service in Cyprus, Belize Canada and the US.
In 1989 The Life Guards moved to BAOR and converted to Armour in Sennelager equipped with Challenger 1 and Chieftain main battle tanks and it was during this time that he served in Canada and the First Gulf War. Options for Change in 1991 saw both regiments of the Household Cavalry form a ‘union’ and a return to Windsor and the reconnaissance role; this time specialising in Guided Weapons on firstly the SWINGFIRE then later SWIG systems.
Over the next 16 years he deployed on numerous OTX’s and tours including Bosnia, Singapore and Canada, holding a number of mainstream appointments including Armoured and Ceremonial Troop CoH, Schools Instructor, PSI, MTWO and Squadron Corporal Major before completing his colour service in May 2007.
Upon leaving the Regular Army he joined The Royal Yeomanry and was appointed Training Officer of S (SRY) Sqn in Nottingham having commissioned in June 2008. He was selected to mobilise and later deploy to Afghanistan in September 2008 to lead the inaugural CORTEZ B-ISTAR Troop under command of 1 Artillery Brigade. Returning from tour in September 2009 he was successful in his application for the job of PSAO. Other roles have included SO2 Recruiting Ops and more recently SO2 Engagement Operations in HQ Centre.
In his personal life Major Goodwin is married to Sally; a Midwife and they have 3 children (2 of which are in uniform, Army and RAF). He enjoys most sports but in particular rugby union, DIY, gardening, military history and shooting his English Longbow.
